Buying a Used Motorbike? Here’s What You Need to Know

Getting a motorbike, new or old, is an exciting time for people. Particularly if they have been wanting a bike for a while. More and more people are getting a second-hand bike though, just because it is more budget-friendly. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to second-hand bikes. However, don’t forget that even though the bike is cheap, you will still have to buy insurance for it though.

Luckily, there are a few companies out there like one sure insurance who can help you find cheap bike insurance though, so you won’t have to worry about spending a fortune on that. All in all, though, if you want a bike then you’ll find a way to get the one you want. However, keep on reading to find out what you should be looking for when it comes to buying a used bike.

Benefits of a Used Bike

There are many benefits that come with buying a used bike. The main benefit (which you shouldn’t find too surprising), is that the price is a lot better. The reason behind this is thanks to the depreciation value of the bike. A new motorbike drops in value the second they’re ridden away, so if you are interested in saving money, then you might as well get a second-hand bike, so that you don’t lose as much money when its value drops.

However, there is a bit of a downside to buying a used bike and that is that you don’t get the added benefits of a new bike. This includes things like a warranty, new safety features, and the knowledge that this bike is entirely yours. However, this isn’t the end of the world though, as you can easily make sure that your second-hand bike is up to scratch by just checking over a few things.

Buying Through a Dealer vs. Private Sale

If you are interested in getting a warranty with your second-hand bike, then your best bet is to get your bike through a dealer as well as some legal protection under trading laws. If you already have a bike and would like to do a part exchange, then some dealers will also do that for you as well. However, the downside to using a dealer, is that they are sometimes a bit more expensive compared to a private seller.
If you are interested in getting your bike as cheaply as possible, then your best bet is to go to a private seller. When buying from a private seller, you are cutting out the middleman, meaning that you are in a better position to get the bike for a cheaper price. The only issue with doing it this way is that you don’t get any warranty or protection, however, you do get your bike for a cheaper price. So, the decision is up to you.

Checks to Make on the Bike

Before you buy the bike, there are a few checks that you should do. You need to check if the mileage on the bike matches it service history and you also need to double check if the bodywork and tank are in a good condition. Are there any scratches or dents? If the bike is covered in stickers, then you should remove them, as stickers are great at hiding scratches. If there are any faults then you are in a good position to haggle, meaning that you can get a lower price.

Don’t forget though that if the faults are too great, then it might be better for you to just walk away, particularly if you will have to spend your money fixing the bike up. There will be plenty of other bikes out there that are in a better condition. Bikes aren’t for everyone though. A lot of people prefer driving a car to places, particularly if they have a family to drive around. You don’t even need to get a brand new expensive car either, you can easily get a used family car instead. If you are thinking about getting a family car, then you should check out this article here about the best-used family cars to buy.
